Guardian Angels

I just wanted to say a very big THANK YOU to everyone who has left encouraging comments and/or shared your own personal experience of a child drowning or near drowning.  I was worried about sharing such a personal story for fear of the judgement that comes with it.  And I'm not naive, I know there are those out there who are judging my ability as a mother because of this incident, but so many of you have spoken out in support and encouragement.  It's because of your thoughtful comments and an increased sense of a community that I cannot regret sharing my story.

I received an email today from a very close friend of mine, Samantha from Healthy Cooking for a Picky Husband. She sent me the following devotion from Harvest Daily Devotions.  It was encouraging in light of the incident, and I decided to post it tonight so that it may be an encouragement for all of you as well.  What an awesome thing to think about!...

Secret Agents
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.— Psalm 34:7

Do we have guardian angels—personal angels who hang out with us and go where we go? I don't know for certain, but I do know that as believers, we have angels in our lives. Every Christian does.
The Bible clearly teaches, "The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them" (Psalm 34:7). Psalm 91:11 tells us, "For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. And Hebrews 1:14 says of angels, "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?" Also in Hebrews, we read that "some have unwittingly entertained angels" (13:2). That is an interesting thought, isn't it? Maybe you have met an angel. If you have, you probably wouldn't know it. I doubt that an angel would tell you he is an angel. (By the way, when we read about angelic appearances in the Bible, angels always appear as males.)

No one can say for certain whether we have guardian angels, but something Jesus said would imply that perhaps children have guardian angels. He said, "Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 18:10). This is reassuring, knowing how easily children can get themselves into trouble. But even if they don't have a personalized angel, we can know that angels are involved in their lives.

And angels are involved in the lives of Christians. We have angelic activity around us every day. Angels are at work in our lives, protecting us, guiding us, and sometimes even speaking to us. But they work undercover. We could describe them as God's secret agents.

What do you think about guardian angels? Has there ever been a time when you thought you encountered an angel?

  2. Don't beat yourself up over what happened to Brody. It never occurred to me that others might think I was a bad mother that time you stepped off into the pool before you knew how to swim, and I had to jump in fully clothed to rescue you. I had just the opposite reaction. I thought I was an amazing mom for saving you! And you are more of an amazing mom than I ever was, so relax. I don't think there is a person out there thinking you were not watching Brody like a hawk. Besides, how many other adults were there, too? God is using you as a voice to turn this accident into potentially saving another child's life. And yes, I definitely believe in guardian angels. I begin my days and end each day praying that God will place His guardian angels around each one of you personally to protect you from all harm. I love you all so much!

  4. My sister said when she went through the roof of the VW in that horrific accident a man came up to her and told her to be calm and lay down while waiting for the ambulance. She said by the time she was leaving the scene she couldn't find him anywhere. She thinks he was an angel. And...she could probably tell the story a little better.

Wow. Funny how God works. I was going to send you the exact devotion! Sam, how did you know about Harvest? Greg Laurie is a pastor in California and I've found his devotions and many of his books to be so powerful!
