Number Two

Let's just call this the "Number 2" post of the Potty Training Diaries.  You can choose to continue reading or not. ;)

Saturday night, Jonathan and I were at dinner with friends when we received the text from my SIL.  Jonathan and I were sitting at opposite ends of the table when I noticed him smiling from ear to ear as the light from the phone lit up his face in the dark restaurant.  I watched him for a minute, wondering who in the world was texting him and what he was so happy about.  He looked up at me, still with that silly smile on his face, and quickly walked over to show me the series of texts from Jessica.

Jess: "Has Brody ever pooped in the potty?"

Jonathan: "No, why? Did he tonight?"

Jess: "Should I be filming this?"

        Me: "Wow! Yes, tape it!"

Jess: "He like started screaming poo poo potty and then started crying.  So I put him on the pot and now he is plopping."

Me: "I am literally crying about this. I can't believe I missed it!"

Jess: "Aww. Sorry you missed it. He didn't go a lot. Mainly farted and let out one big terd."

This is the picture Jessica took with her iPhone and sent to us as this was all going down.  We proudly passed this around the table...to a group of couples without kids. I'm sure they thought we were nuts!

It's on Like Donkey Kong!

I just registered Jonathan and I for the 2011 Peachtree Road Race.

Well, registered us for the race lottery, that is.  We signed up as a group with our friends Alex and Samantha (our running buddies from last year), so we all race or none of us race.  It's all in the hands of the lottery.  We'll know for sure by Tuesday if we are selected to run  in the 42nd annual Peachtree Road Race on Monday, July 4th, 2011.  If we get selected, it's time to get serious about putting on those running shoes....we are currently finishing our last 4 weeks of P90x, so maybe we will hold out for some serious race training until then...

Update (3/28/11): We found out this morning we were picked to run the Peachtree Road Race! Now it's time to get motivated and lace up my running shoes.  Oh boy...

Chalk It Up to Having Fun

Forgive me for all the outdoor posts lately.  We just can't seem to stay inside anymore.

Brody's Aunt Jessi caught us vandalizing the patio on Monday afternoon.  It was Brody's first experience with chalk, and I am thankful she snuck up on us like paparazzi to capture the memory.

 Making clouds from little feet

"Alligator!"

I thought it would be fun to trace around Brody's little body.
Brody didn't think so.

Fun at the Park

Saturday was perfect.  Not just the weather, but the time well spent in that gorgeous weather.  We took Brody to a new park that just opened 3 weeks ago not far from our house.  I have a feeling we will be spending oodles of time there this spring/summer.  Brody had a blast!

There were slides to slide down,

Swings to swing on,

Walls to scale up,

Rocks to climb over,

Drums to beat,

 And horses to tame.

Like I said, it was perfect!

Jonathan and I couldn't believe we were watching our little baby boy actually play on the playground. This time last year (almost to the day) we took him to a playground and all he could do was let us push him on the swing.

He wasn't even walking on his own yet...just trying really, really hard.

What a difference a year can make!  I can only dream of what next year will look like at the the park. :)

♫ I think I'll go for a walk outside now...

...The sunshine is calling my name. Get happy now. ♫  (Brady Bunch)

I don't know what is wrong with me lately. All I can think of are random songs for my post titles. Forgive me.

Obviously, the weather has been beautiful this week, and I am so very thankful.  Brody and I have been taking full advantage of the warm-ish, sunny days.  We've been going for walks, tricycle rides, or just throwing balls and rocks around in the grass.

Perfection? Pretty close to it.  The only person missing is his daddy, who happens to be in Pennsylvania this week for business.  But thankfully we have some recent memories playing outside with him a couple weeks ago when we got our first taste of gorgeous weather this year.

His daddy is really missing out this week though.  We've spent hours outside and I am loving every moment with Brody!

I love how he waves to our neighbors and belts out a friendly "hi" to anyone who happens to be out-n-about that day.  I love his excitement over each and every school bus that drives past us...as if it is the first one he has ever seen.  "Oh!!! School bus! Here it comes!"  I love how finding small rocks on the side of the road will keep this simple little boy entertained for an entire block.  I love how when he trips over a bump in the grass he yells, "Safe!"  I love how he randomly sings his ABC's (his version, of course).  But what I love most is when he glances up at me with cute little sunglasses over his eyes and a huge grin on his face as if to say "This is perfect, Mommy!".  Yes, Brody, it is.

I think this is going to be the best spring to date!

Random Sidenote: Brody loves trying on sunglasses. He giggles when he finds a pair lying around and fumbles to get them on his face.

You've Gotta Fight..♫boom boom♫..for Your Right..♫boom boom♫..to POTTY!!!

Cheesy title, I know, but I am over the moon excited!  Brody tinkled in the potty tonight!!!  We haven't even officially started potty training yet.  I bought a potty book at T.J.Maxx at Christmas time and stored it in our closet for future use.  Brody found it about a month and a half ago and asked to read it.  We sat down in my closet to read it, and Brody was very intrigued by it.

Around the same time he started showing interest in what I was doing when I was in the bathroom.  So I just told him I was going potty and one day he would too.  Well, about a month ago my mom was in town and suggested we get him a potty chair since he seemed interested.  So I bought him a little baseball potty seat.
She also suggested we just set it on the floor and let him play with it for awhile so that once we decided to sit him on it he wouldn't be as scared.  So that is what I did for a couple weeks.  About 2 weeks ago I decided to let him try sitting on it while we read the potty book.  He was nervous when I first sat him on the seat but I reassured him I was there, and I sat on a stool in front of him to make him feel more secure as we read the potty book together.  He ate it all up as I read the book with silly fluctuating voices.  He forgot all about being on the potty for several minutes until he was ready to get off and said "All done potty."

So we have done the same thing maybe once a day since then.  He will sporadically say, "Poo poo potty" and I will ask him if he wants to go sit on the potty to read his potty book.  If he says yes then we will go sit on the potty for a few minutes and read the book.  Nothing planned or scheduled.  Just when he shows interest.

Tonight, as I was changing his diaper for bedtime he said, "Poo poo potty" and I asked if he would like to sit on it as usual.  So we did.  Now, this might be too much information, but forgive me.  Thankfully he is a boy and there is an advantage to that when you are trying to train them to go on the potty because you can visibly tell when boys need to go.  And tonight I could tell he needed to go.  So we read his potty book and he examined it for a long time before saying, "All done potty."  But, he hadn't gone yet and as far as I could tell would be going soon.  So I grabbed a few more books and we sat in the bathroom and read for several more minutes.  Then he said, "Pee pee potty" followed by "All done potty" as he reached his arms out for me.  So at that point I gave up and reached to get him.  That's when I noticed he had tinkled in the potty!  So I praised him and showed him I was excited.  I was obviously way more excited than he was.  He was happy, but he had no idea why mommy was so happy.

I'm sure there was no connection made tonight to what he accomplished, and it probably won't happen again for awhile; but I am encouraged by the milestone he met tonight as he isn't even 2 yet...and he is a boy!  I'm sure this will take many months and I don't plan on pushing him to do it now just because of what happened.  I just want it to be an enjoyable experience for him.  No pressure.  He'll let us know when he is really ready.

Way to go my precious little man!!!

Toddler Tip #1: Don't leave baby powder in the crib!

I can't believe it has been a month and a half since I last wrote.  Looking back, it was this time last year that my blogging fell apart for several months.  I guess February/March is just a busy time for us.  Nothing specific, just the everyday "busy bug" bites.  The problem with missing so much blog time is that before I know it I'm not as busy but then it just feels awkward to start writing again.  But, instead of putting it off until September, I figured I better just jump back on this blog horse.  There are many stories I could tell about the days missed, but for now I'd rather just show you what Jonathan and I woke up to this morning...

We always sneak into Brody's room before we go to bed and change him into a fresh diaper.  Last night, I must have left the opened bottle of baby powder in his crib.

We heard him in there this morning laughing and squealing with joy.  I guess now we know why.

Like Jonathan told me this morning, all you can do is laugh.
