Sharp Shooters

Jonathan and I have been blessed with an amazing small group.  We get together most Tuesday nights for a Bible study, but we also quite frequently get together just for the fun of it.  We truly enjoy each others' company and always have a great time.  There are five couples in our group, but we don't always have an entire group. No matter which mix of couples show up though, we always just click.

This past Tuesday night we went to Sharp Shooters, a local gun range, so that the guys could teach us ladies how to handle a gun.  I'd say we all did pretty well considering.....
A couple of the guys decided to show off their one-handed gangster skills, but I think the ladies won "most awesome" for our K2 {is that right?!} skills.
No matter how we shot, we looked like pretty cool chicks in our gear.  {Ha! Yeah, right!}
Seriously though, these girls are a great group of friends to have.  We always have a great time on our girls' nights out.
(L-R) Mary, Tara, Me, Beth, Samantha
And I know Jonathan loves hanging out with the guys too. His favorite memories, if I had to guess, would be at the shooting range this past Tuesday night and our weekend at Lake Rabun last month.
He was completely in his element in the water.  He grew up on the river as his backyard was literally the Indian River in Florida.  He showed us his sick water ski and wake board skills as we all sat back in amazement.  And I have to add...he looked pretty hot! {that's 10 brownie points for me if you are reading this, J!}

We had a great time just sitting in our lifejacket "diapers" in the swimming hole every day.  Oh the interesting conversations I could tell you we had! It was nice to get away and just relax with a group of friends.

A couple of nights we drove the boat to dinner.  There is nothing like getting all dressed up and stepping onto a boat to "drive" to dinner. Oh that is the life!!!
The group---minus Mike and Beth.  We missed you guys!
Yes, we are truly blessed with a great small group and a wonderful group of friends.  I can't wait to see what the future holds for us!

Puzzles

I enjoyed my first Monday as a SAHM by teaching Brody how to put together a "big boy" puzzle.  He loved it! And I loved knowing I can do fun things like this with him more often now!

Monster Bash

***Hint: Next week I will be doing my first GIVEAWAY right here at Happily Mother After. So be sure to check back Monday as your odds of winning are pretty good!***

I recently began volunteering in UpStreet as a small group leader with kindergartners at our church. It has only been a couple of months since I started leading my small group but I know I have gained so much more from the experience than my kids.  The curriculum we are given to teach each week is so simple but I have found depth in it as it pertains to my life.  It's amazing how we, as adults, can twist such simple concepts and make them complex. I only hope that my kids are taking away something from me each week.

We have been talking about controlling our inner monsters (i.e. self-control) this month.  The curriculum has been so much fun each week.  Today was KidVenture which is a day for just having fun and building relationships with our kids.  We had a Monster Bash and we all wore crazy monster hair to amp up the fun a few notches.  I thought you guys might enjoy seeing my silly side. :)
The kids had a chance to dress me up as a monster.  This was their creation...
{I covered their faces in the picture as they are not mine to share with the world}
Happy Sunday!

Pumpkins and Gremlins

***Hint: Next week I will be doing my first GIVEAWAY right here at Happily Mother After. So be sure to check back Monday as your odds of winning are pretty good!***

Since I will now be a SAHM, Brody will no longer need care twice a week.  His last day in the young toddler class was yesterday.  I made some special Fall treats for his teachers and the administration to express our gratitude for all they have done.  Check it.
Dunkin' Pumpkins

To make these extra sweet treats you will need:
  1. Donut holes
  2. Cream Cheese Icing
  3. Red and Yellow Food Coloring
  4. Black Cookie Decorating Icing
  5. Pretzels
  6. Toothpicks
  7. Wax Paper
  8. Floral Foam Block
  9. Brown Packaging Paper
Now for the makin':
  1. On very low heat, warm one jar of cream cheese icing in a pan while mixing in red and yellow food coloring to create desired orange icing.
  2. Stick a toothpick {or lollypop stick} in donut holes and dunk into icing to cover completely.
  3. Lay on wax paper.
  4. After icing has hardened, decorate your pumpkins with the black icing and let harden.
  5. Wrap floral foam block in packaging paper to create your "haystack."
  6. Stick toothpicks into foam with about an inch sticking out.
  7. Place pumpkins onto toothpicks.
  8. Crush pretzels to create the stem for your pumpkins.
  9. Voila!

Gremlins

To make these scary but Oh! so tasty treats you will need:
  1. Large bag of pretzels, crushed
  2. Two bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips
  3. M&M's
  4. Wax paper
To make the gremlins appear:
  1. Melt the chocolate chips in a pan on low heat.
  2. Once completely melted, mix in the pretzels in small amounts until pretzels are completely covered and no extra chocolate remains.
  3. Drop chocolate pretzels by the spoonful onto wax paper.
  4. Create eyes with M&M's
  5. Watch out! Those gremlins will get ya! Better cover them up!

Hope you guys enjoy making these as much as I did.  The gremlins were the tastiest in my opinion. I'm thinking next time I will make the pumpkins with cake balls instead of donuts.

Happy Fall Y'all!

Traveling with "Daddy"

***Hint: Next week I will be doing my first GIVEAWAY right here at Happily Mother After.  So be sure to check back Monday as your odds of winning are pretty good!***

Last week, Brody and I had the opportunity to go to Alabama with Jonathan.  It was so nice to be able to go on a business trip with him since, most of the time, we are left behind due to my part-time job.  I was able to rearrange my patients last week, seeing them all on Monday, so Brody and I drove later that day to meet up with Jonathan in Birmingham.

There was really nothing special about this trip except for the time we were able to spend together as a family.  You wouldn't believe how special something so simple can be when your husband has to travel for business regularly.  We mostly just enjoyed eating dinner out together each night after he finished teaching {he is a software consultant/trainer}.  Not only was it nice to not have to cook, but it was fun to giggle and hang out together without the day-to-day stress that sometimes haunts us at home.
After dinner one night, we drove around to find Fro-Yo {Frozen Yogurt}, our latest guilty pleasure, and found it at this beautiful little outdoor shopping mall called The Summit.  We walked around and played in the fountains for a little while while our stomachs made room for the yummy treat.
Speaking of eating out.....we were sure to avoid Lloyd's BBQ this trip.  We ate there a few weeks ago on a separate trip to B-ham.  The sign promised "fine BBQ."  However, it was the worst BBQ we had ever put in our mouths and the atmosphere was less than desirable. We felt like we were in an assisted living facility.  I'm pretty sure the looks on our faces said it all as the old man sitting at the table next to us was hacking up his entire dinner. We snapped this picture before we left to remind ourselves never to eat there again. Sorry, Lloyd.
But besides all the eating out we did at night, Brody and I found a few fun things to keep us busy during the day while Jonathan worked hard for the money. {Have I told you lately that I love you, Hubby?}

The biggest hit for Brody was the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.  Can I get a whoop! whoop! for FREE admission!!
I'm pretty sure we were there at the wrong time of the year.  And I'm pretty sure we walked around the least exciting half of the gardens. {It wasn't until we were walking out of the gates that I noticed we should have walked to the right as we entered early that day.  There was a beautiful rose garden and my guess is that just past that we would have seen an array of beautiful flowers.} Oh well! Brody enjoyed it and that was the main goal for me that day.  There were a lot of rocks to climb.....
.....And bridges to cross.
The cutest part was how Brody turned and said "CHEEEEEESE!" at the top of his lungs everytime he heard my camera click. He is used to the Mommy Paparrazzi following him, I guess. I loved watching his sweet grins as he bellowed out hundreds of "Cheeeeese's" for everyone walking around the gardens that day.

We spent most of our time in the Japanese Garden.
They had a nice bridge passing over a pond where we spotted a lot of Koi and turtles.  It was really rather spooky how they all swam up to the surface near the bridge where we stood.  I guess they are used to being fed by visitors because I sure thought they were going to swim away from Brody as he yelled at them through the "windows" of the bridge.
By the time we finished exploring the Japanese Gardens, Brody was pooped {not literally}.  We had walked around a lot, and for the first time in his life, it proved to be too much for him to handle.
So with arms held up high, he looked at me eagerly and said, "Mommy hold you?" {translation: Mommy will you hold me?"}  So I swooped him up into my arms and carried him a mile to the car.  Super Mom? Maybe.  But, I'd be lying if I said we didn't take a rest on the swing for Mommy to catch her breath.
I'm glad we did. It gave me a moment to reminisce about all the times I swung on the front porch swing with my Dad as a little girl.  And it gave me a chance to get one more "CHEEEESE!" from my main squeeze.
I'm looking forward to joining Jonathan on many more business trips as I have quit my job {this is my last week} and will be a SAHM for awhile.  But more on that subject another time.....

You're Beautiful, Mommy!

There are special moments in life that I hope I remember until the day I die.  This is one of them...

Yesterday was a lazy afternoon. We hadn't made any plans with friends or family, and we put our "to-do" lists on hold.  I neglected my hair and skipped the make-up, choosing instead to wear my PJ's.  Jonathan and I snuggled on the couch as Brody played with his cars and we all watched a movie on TV.  A commercial caught Brody's attention.  It was advertising diamonds and portrayed a little boy watching his mom put on some jewelry.  He looked at his mom and said, "You're beautiful, Mommy."

When the commercial had ended Brody turned to look at me, with a sweet little twinkle in his eyes, and said, "You're beautiful, Mommy! You're so beautiful, Mommy!"

My heart melted. {literally, I think.}

~~~
Mommies out there, I hope you find encouragement in this post.  Whether you have on a t-shirt smeared with food, baggy sweatpants, or skipped on the make-up today.....it doesn't matter to your child. I guarantee he/she thinks you are beautiful. So give yourself a break sometimes!
~~~

This afternoon, Jonathan was paying me a sweet compliment as well.  It made me smile, but I had to confess to him.....as sweet of a husband as he is, his endearments could never quite make me feel as special as Brody did yesterday.

I love my boys!

~~~
On a totally unrelated note, check out Brody's ferocious ROAR! for the Pottery Barn Roar Off.  We would love it if you awarded him a badge {click either "Cute," "Funny," or "Ferocious"}. You can award one badge per video, per day.  Each time you award a badge you will be entered to win a $1000 gift card to Pottery Barn!!! So visit each day from now until September 30th to award him a badge and increase your chances of winning a Pottery Barn shopping spree! Come on! It's totally worth it!
Batting Practice
Photo Entry: Red
The Paper Mama
Last weekend the Atlanta Braves played the St. Louis Cardinals.  It was perfect. My parents were in town and so was Jessica, my SIL.
I grew up in a Braves household. Cheering for the Braves is in my blood.  They have always been the one and only team we "Fletcher's" cared about.  Jonathan accepted it and began cheering right along with us after we got married.
...Until Jessica married a baseball player. Who didn't play for the Braves.  She married a Cardinal.  But we quickly forgave her.  And we began to cheer for the Cardinals too.
But last weekend when the Braves played the Cardinals, our loyalty hung in the balance.  We were a house divided.  We were rooting for two different teams, but we were all pulling for just one special player.
We threw a small party in honor of our favorite player that lasted all weekend.  We made posters, decorated with balloons, and celebrated with cookie cake.  We bantered back and forth with Jessica, our loyalty changing with the minutes.
But the best part of the weekend was Friday night during our pre-game batting practice in the backyard.
