Oh Snap!shots of the Week {25}

Happily Mother After
If this is your first time linking up you can check out the details about this party here.
******************************************************

First off, I want to apologize to each of you for being MIA last week.  We had an unexpected "family emergency" {you can read about it here} so getting the party up and running last Friday was not on my priority list. I feel terrible that it was without explanation and many of you were probably wondering what happened, but I hope you will understand and forgive me this time.

That being said, you all submitted some great photos and I enjoyed looking at each of them! {even if I was unable to comment on many of them due to time constraints}

Hands down, last week's {okay, two weeks ago} "people's choice" favorite was this oh-so-clever silhouette from one of my favorite bloggers and photographers.  I am definitely going to give this a try with Brody one of these days. I love this idea!

My personal favorite photo from the last party was from another one of my favorite bloggers and photographers.  She's a long time friend, so I'm a little biased I suppose. :)  But you have to agree that this is a stunning photo!

As for my feature of the week...this photo caught my eye because I just love photographs of children and this photographer states she loves photographing children.  That must be why she has some adorable shots of children alongside this photo on her blog.  Her blog is still growing, so be sure to check her out and spread some love!

My favorite photo {taken from my iPhone} this week will never win a photo contest but it sure does make me smile.  I'm not sure if I smile more because Brody looks so funny in it or because it makes Jonathan shake his head at me every time I bring it up. It's a similar situation to the time I painted Brody's toenails. I'm all about Brody becoming a manly man but sometimes I just can't help the urge to have a little fun.  Ha! Ha!
It makes Brody laugh when he sees this photo too, but I hope when he is older that he will forgive me for posting this. :)

When Death Brings New Life

Well so much for getting back to a consistent blog schedule.  Last week's turn of events left me thinking very little about blogging.

Last Monday morning I received a text from my mom saying that my brother, Chad, had received THE call.  His transplant coordinator at Florida Hospital in Orlando called to let him know that they had a kidney and liver for him.

It was the call Chad, his wife, and the rest of my family have been praying for and anxiously awaiting since he was put on the list this past December.  I couldn't believe it was already happening...which was weird because at times it felt like we had been waiting forever for his new organs.

I knew what I had to do. I had to drive down there and be with him.  I had to, and I wanted to.  I promised Chad back in December that I would be there at the hospital when the time came, and I wasn't about to break that promise.

So, I threw everything I thought Brody and I might need for the week into a few bags, grabbed the laundry I had planned to wash later that day, and anxiously waited to hear from my parents that the organs were viable and the surgery was a definite.

I waited for their call as long as I could {which wasn't very long} and then I started calling repeatedly and bugging them about "what should I do?"

Apparently there were so many transplants going on that same day in that same hospital that Chad's surgery kept getting postponed.  So, until they were ready to take Chad into surgery they were unable to check the donor's organs to make sure they were good enough to transplant.  We knew they were a match for Chad, but we didn't know if they were in good shape.

It was getting late in the day {around 2:00 pm} and I had waited as long as I could.  My mom told me the doctor sounded pretty confident that the donor's organs would be just fine, and that was all I needed to hear to get on my way.  Waiting around in another state was torture, so I took my chances and began the drive to Florida.

Brody was such a trooper that day.  He didn't fuss a bit when I told him we were packing up all of our stuff spontaneously and taking a long trip down to Florida.  Instead, he was excited to see his Uncle Chad along with his Aunt Alison, Wynni, and JimPop; so he helped me gather his things and load them quickly into the car.  He is quite possibly the most flexible kid on the planet, and I am so thankful for that!

Brody and I prayed for Uncle Chad as well as our safe travels as we began our 7 hour drive to Orlando. Then we sang and laughed together most of the trip.  I must have been out of mind when Brody asked for my bottle of water.  I passed it back to him and let him sip from it as he sat quietly in his car seat.  Before I knew it, the bottle of water was completely gone.  I was amazed and laughed at him, not thinking much more of it until I heard him crying out, "I gotta go pee pee!!!"

Wouldn't you know we were miles between exits.  The next thing I knew he was saying, "I went pee pee in my diaper."

"But Brody you don't have a diaper on!"

"Oh...I pee pee in my car seat."

That'll teach me to give my child an entire bottle of water in the car!

Other than that, the trip was a breeze and Brody was an angel.  Before we knew it we were arriving at Florida Hospital...and Chad was still in the holding area, waiting for them to take him back into surgery.

I was secretly thankful for all of the delays at the hospital.  I was hoping to get some time with Chad before they took him into surgery.
And time was what we got.  I arrived at the hospital around 9:45pm and they didn't take him back for surgery until 3am the next morning.  They made the first incision at 5:15am {almost 24 hours after Chad initially got the call that he needed to rush to the hospital!}.

Tuesday afternoon we waited around anxiously in the surgical waiting room with Alison, her parents, my Uncle Ricky, and my parents.  We had heard that all went smoothly during the surgery, but we wanted to see him with our own eyes.

We waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Finally, two and a half hours after the designated time they told us we would be able to go and see him, my dad asked the receptionist to call up to the ICU and find out what was going on.  Apparently Chad had been in ICU all that time, but no one realized we hadn't been called to come up yet.

We were frustrated that we had waited all that time for no reason, but we were happy to finally get to check on him.  Chad was still under anesthesia and in a deep sleep at the time but we were able to take a peak at him.

I'll never forget the way he looked with the ventilator breathing for him and tubes coming from every possible place on his body.  It was a shocking sight, even for me.  I'd seen people in much worse conditions with many more tubes and such when I was a PT student, but this was different.  This was my big brother.

I wasn't prepared for all the tubes...especially the ventilator...but all in all he really did look good.

By the next day {Wednesday}, he had awoken.  Soon after, they weaned him off the ventilator.  It was hard for him to talk at first, so he communicated to Alison via her iPad {which was a miracle in itself since we thought Brody had broken her iPad on Monday...it started working again the day Chad needed it to communicate!}

Once his throat felt better and he started talking, he didn't stop!  We all got so tickled about how much he was talking.  We hadn't seen "Chatty Chad" in a really long time.  His energy level was through the roof.  It was amazing.  I had not seen that side of my brother in a really long time.  In fact, we all talked later about how we hadn't realized just how unlike himself he had become in recent years.  He had slipped from us and we didn't know it until we had the "old" Chad back.

On Thursday, just three days after his surgery, they moved him from ICU to a regular room in the transplant unit.  Apparently, that was somewhat of a record time.  The doctors and nurses marveled at his progress.  I overheard one of them telling him that all the staff had been fascinated by his recovery.

Praise the Lord!

Each day that we went to visit him there were less tubes.  I was surprised he wasn't leaking from all the extra holes they had put in him, but somehow he managed to keep it under control. :)

By Friday night, our last visit with him, he had only a couple of tubes remaining and he was walking laps around the nurses station.  It must have looked like a parade to onlookers as we all walked in front of, beside him, and behind him!

We each huddled by his bed and took pictures with the "new" Chad.
Well, everyone except Jonathan {who had flown in Thursday night to be with us}.  We stuck him in the corner with a mask since he had a lingering cough.  Chad's immune system is severely compromised at this point and we weren't taking any chances.
Chad was discharged from the hospital on Monday...less than one week after his surgery.  He is currently taking 16 different medications for various reasons.  It's the usual cocktail of drugs given to transplant patients plus a few specifically tailored for him.  Our hope is that they will be able to, over time, wean him down to 2-3 medications...the "lifetime" meds all transplant patients must continue taking.

He is required to go to weekly labs at the hospital every Monday and Thursday, but I think he knows this is a small price to pay for the new life he has been given.

We are humbled by and thankful to the donor and the donor's family for making the decision to donate those organs.  Without this selfless act of kindness we would not have our talkative, highly energetic, fun-loving Chad back.  We continue to pray for the family who lost their loved one and we are sensitive to the fact that they are mourning as we celebrate.

Death truly brought new life.

I must also add that my family has been overwhelmed by the out-pour of prayers sent on Chad's behalf.  We know that his "fascinating," "remarkable," "unbelievable," and "amazing" recovery is nothing short of God's answer to those prayers.  To God be all the glory for His hand that was upon Chad through it all!
"Chief of the Medical Staff" by artist Nathan Greene, 1990

The picture above can be found hanging in Florida Hospital and has been one of Chad's favorites for awhile now.  He said this picture is the last thing that he remembers "seeing" in his head before he went under anesthesia.  Was it God's way of comforting him perhaps?  I know that many times I specifically prayed that God would guide the surgeon's hands.  I think He did just that!

The Dirty Dozen

I've really enjoyed this month of making wholesome choices, sponsored by McDonald's.  It has really challenged me to do a little digging into the facts and rumors pertaining to fitness and nutrition.  I know I can easily incorporate the changes into my daily routine and stick to them.

For this last week of the McDonald's Wholesome Choices Blogger Program, I decided to finally look into a subject that has bothered me for quite some time...

Which fruits and veggies do I need to splurge on and buy organic?  And which ones can I save the money on?

Well, thanks to a recent conversation with some of my favorite friends, I finally found my answer.  My guess is that many of you already know what I am about to tell you.  But, for those of you who were clueless like me, I decided to share what I consider to be golden information.

The answer lies within what is know as "The Dirty Dozen" and "The Clean Fifteen" which you can find on the Environmental Working Group's {EWG} website  under their list known as "The Shopping Guide to Pesticides in Produce."

Here is what they have to say:
The Shopper's Guide to Pesticide in Produce will help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues and are the most important to buy organic. You can lower your pesticide intake substantially by avoiding the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated produce.
So what's on their lists? Here's the dish:

The Dirty Dozen {fruits and veggies you should splurge on and buy organic}:

  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Strawberries
  4. Peaches
  5. Spinach
  6. Imported Nectarines
  7. Imported Grapes
  8. Sweet Bell Peppers
  9. Potatoes
  10. Domestic Blueberries
  11. Lettuce
  12. Kale/Collard Greens
The Clean Fifteen {fruits and veggies with the lowest levels of pesticides}:
  1. Onions
  2. Sweet Corn
  3. Pineapple
  4. Avocado
  5. Asparagus
  6. Sweet Peas
  7. Mangoes
  8. Eggplant
  9. Domestic Cantaloupe
  10. Kiwi
  11. Cabbage
  12. Watermelon
  13. Sweet Potatoes
  14. Grapefruit
  15. Mushrooms

Unfortunately, for me, most of the fruits and veggies I prefer and buy most often are on The Dirty Dozen list.  So, it looks like I need to suck it up and splurge a little on my fruits and veggies.  I'll have to find other ways to save on my groceries. Bummer.

One of my least favorite things to do is grocery shop. Ask my husband! So I'm glad that McDonald's is committed to giving us more delicious choices to feel good about in the months and years to come. That way, when I run out of food in the pantry, I can feel better about having to grab a quick bite to eat on my way to Publix! :)

Happily Mother After
If this is your first time linking up you can check out the details about this party here.

Last week's "people's choice" favorite photo was taken by some newbies to this party. The blog was created by a teenager and her friends to share their love for photography.  I think we can all appreciate that!

My personal favorite photo from last week's party comes as no surprise to anyone who knows me well.  I LOVE spring and I drool over cherry blossoms.  Thanks to another newbie to our party, I was able to enjoy the cherry blossoms last week...even though they haven't really seemed to bloom much around here yet. Weird.  {Tip: Check out Susan's blog! It's a cute one and she seems to be a sweetie!}

My favorite photo from this past week was a silhouette portrait I like to call
"A New Generation of Friends."

And just for fun I thought I'd show you the UNEDITED version of the above picture.  I couldn't stand the column and rails in the background. They distracted the eye from the silhouette itself and cluttered up the picture.  I also darkened the shadows and brightened up the colors of the sunset to look the way it truly did that night.

Sports Class

Today was Brody's first day of his ten-week-long "Sports Class" at our local community center.  Well, maybe I should clarify...Today was Brody's actual first day of Sports Class.

You see, I got him all pumped up last week about going to play ball with other kids his age at Sports Class, dressed him up in his athletic gear, took a picture of him before he left for his first day of Sports Class, and threw him in the car as quickly as I could so that we would not be late for his first class.
But, sadly, when we arrived there wasn't a small group of two-year-olds in gymnasium #2.  No, instead there was a large group of senior citizens in gymnasium #2 that were lined up to cast their votes.

One of the moms that happened to be there for her daughter's gymnastics class down the hall could see the distressed look on my face and asked if she could help.  After explaining what I was looking for, she politely informed me that Sports Class didn't begin until the following week.

Pregnancy Brain.

Poor Brody, oblivious to what was going on, questioned me as we walked back out to the car.

"I don't get to go to Sports Class?"

"I'm sorry, baby, Mommy was wrong.  Sports Class is not until next week. I promise we will come back next week so that you can play ball with the other kids your age in Sports Class."

And so we did.

We went to Sports Class today and Brody had a ball! {pun intended}

He swung at bubbles with a baseball bat, he raced the other kids across one side of the gym and back to the other {one of Brody's favorite parts of the class....and I must add that he seems to have his Daddy's runner genes}, he threw balls and bean bags as far as he could across the gym, he learned to catch a ball in a glove by chomping down on it like an alligator with his right hand once it was in the glove, he learned to run the bases in order, and he learned to hit the ball off of a tee {something his Daddy, JimPop, and Uncle Shane had previously taught him}.

Yes, he had a ball indeed!

Preggercise

Now that the big news is out {Psst...here's the scoop if you missed it}, I can finally share my latest McDonald's Wholesome Choice lifestyle change:

Preggercise.

I have to admit it...there hasn't been much exercising {okay, none at all} going on in this household lately.  I've been too nauseated and just plain exhausted.  But now that I've made it past the first trimester I'm hoping the nausea/vomiting will subside so that I can boost my energy level with some prenatal exercise {or as I like to call it, "preggercise"}.

I've been researching the do's and don'ts for preggercise and thought I'd share some commonly agreed upon guidelines:
  1. Check with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise routine during pregnancy.
  2. It's generally safe to maintain your pre-pregnancy exercise routine {if you had one} as long as you are a normal/low risk pregnancy.
  3. If you did not have a pre-pregnancy exercise routine, start slowly.  Walking and prenatal yoga are excellent choices.
  4. Warm up
  5. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise.
  6. Take in more nutritious calories {yes, more than the extra 300 they tell you eat just for being pregnant}
  7. Listen to your body. It will tell you when to slow down or stop altogether.
  8. Wear comfortable, nonrestrictive clothing and supportive footwear.
  9. Kegels are a great exercise to add to any preggercise routine.
  10. Avoid overheating.  Do not exercise in extreme temps.
  11. Be prepared to make adjustments regularly throughout your pregnancy.  As you progress further along in your pregnancy {ahem, get bigger and bigger} it will become increasingly difficult to continue at the same intensity as in your first trimester. Again, listen to your body.
Discontinue preggercising if you experience any of the following: {list copied from WebMD}
  • Feel chest pain.
  • Have abdominal pain, pelvic pain, or persistent contractions.
  • Have a headache
  • Notice an absence or decrease in fetal movement.
  • Feel faint, dizzy, nauseous, or light-headed.
  • Feel cold or clammy.
  • Have vaginal bleeding
  • Have a sudden gush of fluid from the vagina or a trickle of fluid that leaks steadily.
  • Notice an irregular or rapid heartbeat.
  • Have sudden swelling in your ankles, hands, face, or calf pain.
  • Are short of breath.
  • Have difficulty walking.
  • Have muscle weakness.

On a more personal note, my exercise of choice is running. I was running before I became pregnant and will continue to run for exercise during this pregnancy {as long as it is comfortable}.  Since I basically took the first trimester off due to sickness, I am starting slowly.  I am getting out and walking daily now and plan to pick up jogging in the next couple of weeks.

My biggest struggle when it comes to preggercise is getting adequate water and caloric intake.  I've never been a huge fan of water, so that's a struggle of mine even when I'm not pregnant.  The increased demand for calories on my body during pregnancy has also been difficult though because I have been sick. I feel hungry, but who can eat when you are nauseated? Not me! So, hopefully, I will continue to feel better by the day and increase my caloric intake to fit my preggercise routine.

It also makes it difficult to get the right amount of nutrients when you are an on-the-go momma.  Thankfully, McDonald's is committed to giving us more delicious choices to feel good about in the months and years to come.  Regardless of your dietary needs, you'll find nutrient-minded choices at McDonald's.  And, through McDonald's "Made For You" cooking system, you can special order various menu items to help meet your nutritional needs.

"Extra pickles with my ice cream cone, please!"  :)

OH BROTHER!

If you are a faithful reader I'm sure you've noticed my lack of posting lately. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, there has been a lot going on around here.  I wasn't quite ready to explain why at the time, but I think the time has come for me to explain myself.

I'm a terrible, terrible liar.

Any really good friend of mine would tell you that I can't keep any big news {of my own} a secret for long.  So, my strategy for keeping personal things in my life a secret is silence.

Well, since this blog is mostly about my life, it makes it difficult for me to continue blogging about my life without revealing the big secret.

So I became silent.  I stopped posting anything personal about my life.  That's how I could assure myself that I would not spill the beans.

But I'm ready to share this secret with all of you, my sweet readers, now.

If you participated in this past Friday's Oh Snap!shots of the Week link party then you probably already guessed the news based upon my favorite photos of the week...

That's right!  Brody is going to be a big brother!!!

Phew! It sure feels good to get that off my chest! Now I can get back to blogging more regularly.  I'm looking forward to documenting this pregnancy and sharing this journey with all of you. :)

{Stay tuned for the introduction of Baby #2 in early September.}

Last week's "people's favorite" photo seemed to be a no-brainer as so many of you voted for it!  Just take a look at it and you'll know why.  I'm so glad Bree decided to join this party because I'm loving her style...and when I read her bio I realized that I should just copy/paste her bio for my own. ;)  {Don't worry.  I won't.}

I had a hard time picking my favorite from last week, so I chose a blog that had a couple of photos I just loved and decided to make a little collage to show them both off! I hope Jenn doesn't mind! :)  These photos are just adorable and a perfect representation of the weather we've been having lately!

Since it was so hard to pick a favorite, I decided to feature the runner-up for my favorite photo last week.  This one caught my eye because I love seeing red birds {technically, Cardinals} fly by.  There is something so breath-taking about them, and Brooke captured their beauty perfectly.

And finally, last week I only had a thumbnail to display for the winner of the "Everyone's Favorite" award.  So, out of respect for Diane I wanted to display the photo one more time at this week's party. Thanks for getting the larger photo to me, Diane!

{Aqua}rd

Is it just me or does it feel awkward to drink eight 8oz glasses of water every day?

Yeah, {aqua}rd.

Maybe it's just me.  I know plenty of people who drink a ton of water every day...and enjoy it.

I'm definitely not one of those people.

I feel like I'm drowning on the inside when I drink that much water.

Plus, I'm not going to lie, water tastes bland and I get tired of it quickly.

So that's why I decided to do a little digging and get to the bottom of this daily water requirement as my next step in this month of wholesome choices.

After reading several articles online, both actual scientific research and articles citing scientific research, here are the conclusions I came to:
  • No one really knows where the 8x8 rule originated.  {8x8 rule: drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day}
  • There is no scientific evidence to back the 8x8 rule.
  • Being thirsty does not mean you are already dehydrated.  It just means your body is telling you it is time to drink so that you do not reach dehydration.
  • If you feel thirsty, then drink. If you don't feel thirsty, then don't drink unless you just want to.
  • Not all of your daily fluid intake needs to come from water.  Much of our fluid intake comes from the foods we eat as well as other drinks such as coffee, juices, teas, and sodas.  So, contrary to popular belief, caffeinated drinks should count toward the daily fluid intake in the vast majority of people.
  • The only drinks that produce a net loss of fluids are those containing alcohol.

The above information applies to the general population of healthy adults in America.  However, your fluid intake should be increased {regardless of a feeling of thirst} in certain instances:
  • During exercise
  • Extreme environments {such as hot or humid weather, higher altitudes, and heated indoor air during winter months}
  • Illnesses such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Certain health conditions {speak with a physician} such as bladder infections or urinary tract infections.  On the contrary, certain health conditions require you to limit your fluid intake due to water retention. Be sure to speak to your physician if you have any concerning health conditions.
  • Pregnancy or breast-feeding

While you may certainly still find articles and physicians advocating the 8x8 rule, I simply want you to be aware that there is no hard evidence supporting this rule that seemed to appear out of thin air.  Pay attention to your body and what it is telling you.  Drink when you are thirsty.  In my opinion, that rule is even more simple than the 8x8 rule!  {It certainly leaves me feeling a lot less guilty.

I'm thankful to McDonald's for this wholesome choices challenge. It has motivated me to get to the bottom of some of my most basic health-related questions.  It has helped me to sift through what is fact and what is fiction.

Thanks, everyone, for being patient with me the past couple of weeks. I have just had so much going on and this link party {along with the rest of my blog} had to fall by the wayside. I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things very soon...which means you'll be hearing all about what has been keeping me from blogland very soon.

I combined the last two weeks into one large party, and here are our winners:

I snapped these photos just yesterday as I took Brody for a walk at a nearby trail. The weather was absolutely amazing and even though I had a million things on my to-do list, I couldn't resist the flawlessly blue skies and perfect temperature.  Oh how I wish for a day like today everyday!...Or at least once a week.
